卢沟桥 Lúɡōuqiáo noun Lugou Bridge 卢沟桥Also known in English as the Marco Polo Bridge, it is located in the south-west of Beijing on the banks of the Yongding River. It was built in 1192, and is 265 metres long. The sides of the bridge are carved with 400-500 stone lions, each one different and, according to tradition, uncountable. In the past, ‘the moon at dawn over the Lugou Bridge’(卢沟晓月) was held to be one of the eight wondrous sights of Beijing, and these words, written by Emperor Qianlong, can still be seen on the bridge today. On July 7th 1937, Japanese troops engaged with Chinese troops in what is known as the Incident at Marco Polo Bridge. This marked the start of China's eight-year war of resistance against Japan. |
