凤 (鳯) fènɡ noun phoenix 凤Also known in Chinese as fenghuang (凤凰). In ancient times, the phoenix was known as king of the birds. The male phoenix is called feng and the female huang. The phoenix has the head of a bird, the neck of a snake, the throat of a swallow, the back of a tortoise, and the tail of a fish. It has five colours and stands six feet in height. In ancient times, the phoenix was associated with the power of the emperor. Today it is still regarded as propitious and appears in many decorative designs. |
